So, it looks like DMR is really making the rounds and I found myself interested. After looking into it, one of the cool things I discovered was the ability to create your own DMR gateway using a DMR hotspot that can be purchased as a kit or fully assembled.
The computer provides the control of the board and the connection to the internet via usually wifi. There are quite a few types of hotspots out there, but they all fall into the two basic categories of simplex and duplex.
I opted to go the simplex route cheaperbut will probably wind up buying a duplex version down the line just to test it out. Within the simplex category of DMR hotspot, there are quite a few variations and manufacturers to choose from.
I had a rather low amount budgeted so my main factor going into this was price. At the time of my purchase, the cheapest option was the Jumbospot purchased as a kit without the Raspberry Pi Zero that controls it. I chose the version of the Pi without the headers to save a few dollars as the Jumbospot kit comes with the needed headers for the board. There is software needed to make this all run, and that can be found on the Pi-Star site. This article was a bit of an afterthought to the build and so I am missing some photos, such as everything still in its packaging.
That said, here are the photos from the build. Pardon the mess, I built this at my computer desk instead of going out to my workbench as I probably should have.
I am not going to go into the configuration details in this article, but do include some links to YouTube that cover that. See the bottom of the article for those links. The unit comes with the needed details offsets and there is quite a bit of info online already. My display did not work, as you see above, until the first few steps of the config were done.
I am unfortunately unable to really test my hotspot as my DMR radio is still on order. I just received notice today that it shipped, so hopefully mid next week I can mess around with it a bit. Update: I have had quite a bit of fun with this radio and hotspot! Still have a lot to learn about them, but so far they work great! For those who are new to DMR and trying to learn like me! Now that we have all the hardware we need, we will be able to switch to installing the various software needed to transform our raspberry pi to Wi-Fi. The first step will be to install Raspbian the lite version, preferably on your raspberry pi.

The completed Pi, DVMega combination put together and ready to go. Yes there are two screws missing. One could download Raspian and install all the software separately but there is an image already created that is very popular called Pi-Star. Pi-Star can be downloaded from here. After inserting the card into the Pi and booting it up, there are two very important steps.
The first is to expand the image to use the entire card. When first written, a small portion of the space is used and a command needs to be run to expand the file system to use the rest of the space. That command is pistar-expand. The second important thing to do is to make sure the image is updated. The Pi-Star creators provide two commands for doing that.
There is a lot of information on this site in addition to this page related to DMR. After configuring the hotspot, I was able to verify that it connected to the BrandMeister Network. I had to choose a simplex 70cm frequency. After consulting the band plans and looking at the Arkansas repeater council page, I was able to choose one to use.
I listen to the Hamradio Workbench podcast and they use a talk group that I programmed into a channel and was able to hear some of that traffic. I also made a call and confirmed that I was able to transmit on the talk group as well as receive.Coaxial cavity filter
My next step is to find other talk groups that I might want to listen to, and determine how I will use DMR going forward. I am planning on taking the hotspot on business trips and possibly use it in the car for DMR mobile.
Overall the process was not difficult, but took some time researching how DMR worked so I could understand the programming better. I used many web resources along with several YouTube videos. I still have a few more bookmarked to watch but I am getting a handle on it.

Absolutely none of them are compatible! Choosing what digital voice standard you'll go with can be daunting. In the ham radio arena, the picture is a little less clear. DStar took an early lead, but Yaesu is keen to take market share with their Fusion offering.
Hams have always been keen to leverage off existing commercial equipment, and it seems the most popular commercial system adopted presently is DMR. This is helped in no small part by the ready availability of DMR radio equipment at prices that rival traditional analogue two way radio, and that one of the biggest names in two way radio, Motorola, are throwing their weight behind DMR.
Three flavours: There are three "tiers" or levels of functionality for DMR systems. Tier 1: The simplest form of DMR is Tier 1, which is mainly used for simplex communications, with no repeaters. Tier 2: Things start to get a bit more complicated here.
What this means is that two completely separate radio transmissions can be going through the repeater at the same time; each radio takes turns in transmitting in short Repeaters can be linked via the internet to form networks that can be as small as just two repeaters, or thousands of repeaters across the world. Tier 3: This is effectively a trunked radio system on top of Tier 2. A pool of frequencies are used to carry the TDMA transmissions. This is used by more complex or larger networks for big businesses and commercial radio users.
DMR has the advantage that it four times more efficient when it comes to spectrum usage. Not only that, but DMR offers some very flexible calling facilities - you can call one person, a group of people, or everyone in your fleet at once. While not every DMR network supports it, sending of data and short messages is also possible.
DMR is also designed to be easy to network, with connections using IP, so creating wide coverage areas using a network of DMR repeaters is already built-in; cover your city or cover the entire country!
Yet another advantage is because a DMR transmitter is only turned on about half the time due to it transmitting in bursts, battery life is longer. On a repeater or simplex frequency, every radio must use the same colour code to be able to communicate together.There is a cheaper way and it is called Zumspot.
If you go this route be aware that the Pi Zero comes without the header pins soldered on so you'll have to do this yourself. I like doing this stuff. Makes it feel more DIY. It only costs a few pennies more than buying it all separately anyway and there is no soldering involved. Now let's make it work. I'm not kidding. Lets download a couple of things.Fueguinas hot
First the Pi-Star image file from here. Make sure and get the one for the Raspberry Pi unless you have the other hardware you are working with. Takes a few minutes but it will write the Pi-Star Image file perfectly. We're going to set our Wi-Fi connection up here. I use the wifi on my smart phone for this. Also if you want you can change the country from JP to US. It isn't really necessary as it has to do with wifi channels. Now simply put your SD card into your pi-zumspot combo and boot.
Open a web browser and navigate to. When it comes back it will have you re-add the modem and then you have a field to put your DMR ID in. I know I glossed over the setup. If you got this far you'll figure the rest out. Once you get in you might want to turn off D-Star if you aren't using it. I've only discussed setting up DMR. Also one quick note that may be of some help. This may be helpful some day to you.
I built up my zumspot and used it perfectly for a day or two. Then the next day on the drive to work it didn't connect. It did connect to my iPhone wifi hotspot but never connected to the DMR network. Because there is no mouse, keyboard, OLED, etc. I contemplated re-flashing the card and starting over then thought about it a minute. I connected my laptop to my cell phone network and found the IP address of the Raspberry Pi under the zumspot.
There are all manner of network discovery tools out there as well. Fing has a graphical app for IOS and Android as well so that might be easier for some. Soon as it popped up I saw the DMR button wasn't green and I switched the Brandmeister server from to which then immediately connected.
